I believe that by following three basic rules, it is relatively easy to achieve a high ranking with the major search engines:
- Add lots of relevant content
- Build up plenty of good quality inbound links
- Be patient
Content
Search engines like big web sites. In general, a site with 1000 web pages will fair better than one with 100. Search engines also like text that their spiders can easily crawl, so static web pages containing standard HTML text will get indexed more quickly and be more successful than pages that are dynamically generated with content from a database.
To create content, try adding a glossary of terms to your site, or perhaps a frequently asked questions section. Pages containing news items are also easy, and useful, to add to your site. You can easily add syndicated content from RSS feeds. This is a great way to add content as it changes on a regular basis, which will encourage search engine spiders to keep coming back to your site.
Inbound Links
Inbound links are also very important to your web site's success. Use link exchange sites, write articles, produce press releases, link to your site from other sites you own, and get your friends to link to your site.
Be Patient
Old sites are more popular with search engines than new sites, so you need to be patient to some extent. In two years' time, your site will probably fair better than it does today with search engines, even if you don't add any content or inbound links.
There are no guarantees of course, but by following these three basic principles, you should be able to produce a successful site.

Using Perl and Regular Expressions to Process Html Files - Part 1
By: John Dixon | 17/03/2008 | ProgrammingLike many web content authors, over the past few years I've had many occasions when I've needed to clean up a bunch of HTML files that have been generated by a word processor or publishing package. Initially, I used to clean up the files manually, opening each one in turn, and making the same set of updates to each one. This works fine when you only have a few files to fix, but when you have hundreds or even thousands to do, you can very quickly be looking at weeks or even months of work.
