Here is a list of things you should do:
- Use the 'title' tags to add a title to each web page. Titles should be no more than 60 characters (including spaces) and should contain primary keywords once or twice. The title should be contained within the head tags.
- Directly below the title, and wrapped inside 'description' tags, create a keyword rich description of up to 250 characters (including spaces).
- Create a site map or, better still, create one and submit it to Google.
- Use plenty of keywords in the body of each web page, and use the keywords multiple times. A keyword density of between 5% and 20% is ideal.
- Use between 150 and 250 words on each web page.
- Put the most important keywords towards the top of each page.
- Put keywords in image ALT tags.
- Put keywords inside heading, bold, or italic tags to emphasize them.
- Put keywords inside bulleted lists.
- Include keywords in hyperlinks.
- Use long hyperlinks and include keywords in them.
- Place keywords throughout the whole site.
...and a list of things you should not do:
- Do not use JavaScript to generate navigation buttons etc, as search engines will probably ignore it.
- Avoid using frames.
- Avoid using Flash.
- Avoid putting text inside images.
- Do not use images for navigation.
- Avoid having dangling pages that do not link to anywhere else.
- Avoid restructuring your site if you can. If you have to, make sure that you use permanent redirects so that search engine spiders can find the new locations of your web pages.
- Do not pack your web pages with keywords. If you have a page that contains the same keyword hundreds of times, search engines won't take too kindly to it.

Using Perl and Regular Expressions to Process Html Files - Part 1
By: John Dixon | 17/03/2008 | ProgrammingLike many web content authors, over the past few years I've had many occasions when I've needed to clean up a bunch of HTML files that have been generated by a word processor or publishing package. Initially, I used to clean up the files manually, opening each one in turn, and making the same set of updates to each one. This works fine when you only have a few files to fix, but when you have hundreds or even thousands to do, you can very quickly be looking at weeks or even months of work.
