If you're reading this right now, you've probably heard plenty about how important this thing called SEO is to your business - though you may not know why or for that matter, what SEO is.

SEO is short for search engine optimization; but of course this doesn't really answer either of your questions, so let's get into a little more about what SEO actually is and why it's important to the future growth and success of your business.

Professional search engine optimization is not a single thing; rather it's a process or more accurately, several different processes which are intended to help your website be found more easily using search engines.

Since the vast majority of the traffic to most sites comes from search engines rather than from people actually typing the site's address into their browser, being visible in the search engines is crucial to your business' success online.

The idea is to make your site (especially the content on your site) attractive not only to readers but to the search engines as well - when properly implemented, the end result is more visitors and ultimately, higher sales for your business.

Even if you don't actually sell anything via your site, it serves another very important function; your prospective customers will find out where your business is located more often than not through a search engine query.

The Yellow Pages are fast going the way of the dodo and every business which wants to remain viable from this point on would do well to make sure that their customers can find them on the web - and this means search engine optimization.

You can think of having a website which is not optimized for search engines as akin to removing your awning and pulling all of your advertising, as well as taking your listing out of the phone book.

It would be nearly impossible for you to stay in business this way and online, the situation is much the same for businesses who fail to recognize the importance of SEO.

How Does It All Work?

You might wonder just how SEO works and unfortunately, I can't really offer you a hard and fast answer here. Search engines use incredibly complex algorithms to determine the page ranking of websites in relation to the search terms users enter.

These algorithms are trade secrets and the criteria used by the search engines is constantly evolving. Again, SEO is a process and what worked last year isn't so successful now; and a year from now the picture may be different as well.

Because of this, no reputable SEO consulting firm will make you promises about specific page rankings for your site.

Even though a lot has been learned and continues to be learned about how the search engines work through keeping a close eye on search results and some clever reverse engineering, but trying to promise a specific result is a fool's errand.

What is known is that the content on your site needs to be relevant to the search terms (also known as keywords) which your most likely visitors will be searching for.

There are also some things which are known not to work in terms of improving a site's page ranking - and in fact, these techniques can even result in the site's rank being lowered.

These practices are seen as spamming the search engines and in some cases can even lead to a site being removed from search engine indexes, meaning that the site will not be found at all, regardless of how highly ranked it may have been before.

Some of the things to avoid include:

keyword stuffing; this is the practice of cramming your content with keywords. This not only turns off visitors (the very people you're trying to do business with).

loading your pages with unrelated keywords in the effort to rank for popular searches which have nothing to do with your site's content (this is a far more common practice than you may think but do this at your own peril);

  • hiding text or links in your pages;
  • using redirects to bring in visitors who are looking for something else entirely;
  • serving different content to search engines than to users;
  • and more...

Basically, anything which is an attempt to fool the search engines is an unwise move - when they find out; and they will find out sooner or later, you could find your site being invisible to the search engines and worst of all, invisible to the consumers you're trying to reach.

SEO is a powerful set of tools for building your business; make sure to use them wisely - and if you're working with an outside firm or consultant, choose one which adheres to ethical SEO practices.
