Kama Sutra - The Proper Application Of The Kama Sutra

When Vatsyayana first penned the Kama Sutra, he had a few important things in mind. He wanted to teach proper Hindu gentlemen of his time the lessons about the major goals in life and how these goals were to be obtained. One of those goals was Sutra, or pleasure derived from experiences. Though the term Sutra could mean pleasure from other than erotic or sexual stimulus, the Kama Sutra has come to be synonymous with sexually learned and those who have studied it find themselves sought after as sexual partners.

While the sexual aspect of the Kama Sutra alone is very educational, the further development of attached emotions and philosophy was also important to Vatsyayana when he wrote the text. This is evidenced by the following quotation from Vatsyayana's Kama Sutra : "Such passionate actions and amorous gesticulations or movements, which arise on the spur of the moment, and during sexual intercourse, cannot be defined, and are as irregular as dreams. A horse having once attained the fifth degree of motion goes on with blind speed, regardless of pits, ditches, and posts in his way; and in the same manner a loving pair become blind with passion in the heat of congress, and go on with great impetuosity, paying not the least regard to excess.

For this reason one who is well acquainted with the science of love (Kama Sutra), and knowing his own strength, as also the tenderness, impetuosity, and strength of the young women, should act accordingly. The various modes of enjoyment are not for all times or for all persons, but they should only be used at the proper time, and in the proper countries and places."

What Was Vatsyayana Trying To Say?

Vatsyayana knew that people were very interested in the study of human sexual behaviors. After all, mankind has not existed for so many years without some first hand knowledge of the subject. However, as an avid scholar of human behavior, he also knew that knowledge of the art of making love was not, in itself, enough to provide for happy relationships. Physical attraction can only reach so far and two people who cannot communicate will not remain together for very long. He also knew that there is a time for everything. There are occasions where certain displays would be unwelcome or even inappropriate.

Throughout the majority of Vatsyayana's text, he tried to show readers of the Kama Sutra how important the emotions and feelings that accompanied congress really were. He advised repeatedly to have an understanding of ones mate and their needs and personality. Without such knowledge and understanding, a relationship would be doomed to failure and unhappiness.

How Does It Apply Today?

Despite advancement and civilization, the human creature is much the same as it was eons ago. We still share the same emotions of our ancestors though our choice of display may differ. What Vatsyayana wrote in the Kama Sutra of his time is still very poignant today. For a relationship to work, more than physical action is required. One must apply themselves to learning their partners quirks and needs.

Listen to your partner and act on what you have heard. As Vatsyayana understood so well, Love is made with the heart, not with the body. Share emotions with your partner and the sexual relationship will benefit also.
