TI-84
The TI-84 Plus is a calculator for graphing purposes designed by Texas Instruments. There's no TI-84, so don't look for it: Only the TI-84 Plus and the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition. The TI-84 Plus is a superior version to the TI-83, which is in itself, an upgrade to the TI-82. This model is pretty much the same when it comes to functionality but it comes with a lot more bang for your buck. The memory of the TI-84 Plus has three times more memory than that of the TI-83 and the CPU (central processing unit, like in your PC) is two and a half times faster. It comes with a built in USB port which allows you to transfer data straight from other devices and also comes with a built clock.
The TI-84 Plus Silver Edition wasn't released until 2004 and is a direct upgrade to the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition. It has a 15 MHz Zilog Z80 processor, 24 kb of RAM, and 1.5 MB Flash ROM. It also contains a built in clock, USB port, and assembly support. The TI-84 Plus Silver Edition uses 4 triple 'A' batteries and a backup cell battery (like the kind you can find in a wristwatch). TI distributes a lot of their TI-84 Plus Silver Editions to schools in yellow casings, while owners can buy clip on colored face-plates and cases in stores and online. You can even buy a kick stand slide case to have your calculator stand up, making calculations quicker. The calculator comes with all sorts of preloaded applications, including App4Math, which allows students to punch in their equations exactly how they see it in their books.
There are three major types of software associated with the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, including the traditional TI-BASIC programming language, z80 assembly language, and Flash. Using those three types of programs, the user is accustomed to games, science tutorials, note taking capabilities, and calculus. This graphing calculator can be used on most exams, including the SAT, ACT, and the IB exams. You may catch a bad break, though, as the instructor might reset the calculator's memory in order to prevent cheating as the built in programs can be pretty advanced.
When TI came out with OS 2.30, graphing speeds were highly diminished. The reason for that was due to the update adding an extra feature known as asymptote checking into the graphing which used up more memory and CPU usage.
In 2006, TI came out with the 2.40 OS version which included the "Teacher Key", which meant that teachers could just press a button to disable any programs that were installed on the calculator so they couldn't be used to cheat on tests. The current version of the TI-84 Plus series is 2.43, which was released in 2007.
