Dr Chris Bird, a clinical neuroscientist at UCL, is cautious that anyone should think Tetris is a short-cut to becoming brainier. "If you practise something you are going to have to engage your brain in some way. By doing something again and again the parts of the brain involved in that operation will change," says Dr Bird. He likens this to London taxi drivers having to learn The Knowledge (the name of every street in London) and explains that by memorising so many things or playing a game over and over again that "some parts of the brain will show an increase in cells, but there's a cost." One thing that Tetris doesn’t seem to help with is visual perception. A study conducted in 2003 showed that players of shoot ‘em up games did seem to have improved visual awareness after playing this genre of game over a period of time but as for those who played on Tetris, there were no improvements made on the person’s visual perception. When fans of the game that had played it consistently for years were asked if they felt it had improved any aspect of their mind or helped improve any aspect of them, one fan answered honestly; "I am sure it doesn't improve anything in the brain, except the Tetris skill itself. I can play today at more than three pieces per second, but I am slow in life, slow and a perfectionist. Tetris never helped me to think better or faster unfortunately."
