Teaching children and young people life skills is vital. Parents, guardians and teachers all have a significant impact on the development of children, the of all kinds of things, from morality and socialisation, interacting with others, learning the norms and values of their culture, to acquiring skills such as reading, writing and mathematics. Unfortunately, a lot of children seem to view education in a negative light, and there are several explanations as to why this might be. The school day is very long for young people, and they can often feel confined and bored, despite regular playtimes and a variety of lessons. For older children and young people, being bookish and overly keen on learning or obeying teachers can lead to negative stereotyping by other students. This is a terrible shame, but peer pressure and bullying are another reason for a dislike of the education system. There also comes a time in life – usually the teenage years, when rebellion tends to occur.
If a child has had a sound upbringing until the age of around four or five, they are usually set to become fully functioning contributors to society, understanding right from wrong and consideration for others. A thirst for knowledge exists in all people to some extent, and it is often worthwhile for parents to encourage children to pursue healthy interests they have outside of the school curriculum. An example of this could be sending a child to ballet school. Learning these sorts of activities can help create an association between hard work and perseverance and reward. Students may also be more willing to respect a teacher who is teaching them a skill which they appreciate and are enthusiastic about. All people have different tastes – parents should always remember that even if it was their own ambition to attend ballet school when they were a child, their son or daughter may prefer modern dance or gymnastics, the list goes on!
No matter which pastime a child or young person chooses, if it is constructive and beneficial, parents should try and encourage lasting enthusiasm. It is best to remember that there are classes which cater for all age groups and ability levels. There are ballet schools which specialise in forging professional careers for their pupils, and others which teach skills but are more geared towards providing exercise, fun and socialisation for those who attend.
For new parents, giving a child the right start in life can seem difficult and daunting. Looking into books and aiming to understand a child’s social and moral development can help parents understand how to deal with situations which arise. Helping a child to have the right confidence levels and people skills to allow success in later life is of huge importance. If possible, allowing them to pursue their interests outside of the classroom, for example evening ballet school, can help them achieve a sense of self worth. They will learn that hard work and perseverance achieves results, and that there are many likeminded people out there for them to make friends with.
