Improving Focus with Sport Psychology

There are many factors that can affect an athlete's performance during a sports practice or competition. Pain from an injury, distractions from the sidelines, and a lack of motivation can all impede a player's success and make it more difficult to perform. Another factor that can affect athletic performance is a lack of mental focus. Lacking focus interferes with an athlete's ability to concentrate on technique and performance, which can lead to errors in game play and contribute to a team loss. Sport psychology can help athletes improve their focus and improve their chances of success.

Identifying Sports Focus

The level and type of focus needed for sports depends upon the type of sport being played. It is not the same for every sport or every playing position. The focus needed by a defensive football player is much different than the focus needed by a tennis player. One of the first steps to improving focus for an athlete is for the athlete to determine what type of focus is needed. If a specific skill is needed for success, then the athlete should focus on that skill. Some athletes may choose to focus on the actions of their opponents so they can better anticipate what will happen and block their opponents from scoring or making major advances in play. Once an athlete determines what type of focus is needed, many techniques can be used to develop this focus and maintain it during competitions.

Practicing Focus

Focus is not an abstract concept that can only be achieved by a select few people. It is actually a skill and, like other skills, can be practiced until it can be maintained for long periods of time. In order to practice focus, athletes can use several techniques designed to improve concentration. Athletes can work with objects and work on focusing on them without any distractions. Athletes can also focus on sounds, which can help improve focus during competitions where spectators can become noisy and distracting. Moving from objects to sounds in the same session can help athletes to improve their ability to switch from one type of focus to another.

Maintaining Focus

Maintaining focus often becomes more difficult as an athlete progresses in skill. When someone begins a new sport, their focus is often held by learning the rules and techniques of the game. As someone improves, their actions become very repetitive and do not require as much focus. Loss of focus can also occur when skilled players are no longer challenged by their opponents. Once the techniques involved in developing focus have been learned, athletes need to learn the skills associated with maintaining focus. One way to maintain focus is by setting short-term goals that help you stay invested in your performance. Improving focus with sport psychology is possible if you are willing to put in the effort needed to learn the techniques that can help you develop focus and concentration. Once you have developed this skill, it can help you to succeed in athletics and the rest of your life.
