Why do humans have body hairs?

The process of hair growth is natural and progresses after a certain age. With an exception to the head, hair growth starts on the human body during and after puberty. The average puberty age is 9-14 years for girls and 10-17 years for boys.

These hairs tend to grow at corners of the upper lip at first and then spread to form a moustache. This is normally followed by hair growth in other parts of the face such as upper part of the cheeks and under the lower lip. Most of the boys can experience hair growth on chest during or after puberty years. Hairs can also grow around their pubic areas, especially at the base of penis. As the boys start ageing, their whole pubic area becomes dense with hair.

Among girls, puberty brings physical changes such as growth of pubic hair, under arm hair and fine hair on legs or arms in addition to other physical changes. In some cases, the pubic hair can spread to the thighs, abdomen and navel. Most of the girls also experience fine facial hair.
