In an article published in Dermatologic Surgery by Blackwell Publishing, a comparative study was conducted on four major fillers out on the US market. Among those fillers were Juvéderm, Juvéderm ULTRA, Perlane, and Radiesse. Because of the rising popularity of these fillers regarding rejuvenation and youthfulness, this data is crucial for all practicing physicians as well as their patients. The comparative factors for these products were based on patient satisfaction and duration of product. To make their comparison more standardized, they implemented two scales: Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) and Wrinkle Severity Rating Scale (WSRS).
With the rising popularity in dermal fillers, patients and physicians have raised questions regarding quality and efficacy. The study was designed to help patients and physicians make wiser choices on fillers for the best results with the least overall expense. A panel of 205 patients between the ages of 18 – 80 years of age (52 being the median) were randomly administered an adequate amount of an undisclosed dermal filler (Radiesse, Juvéderm, Juvéderm ULTRA, or Perlane) to produce the fullest result. They were then asked to return for a touch up in 4 months. Once they've completed the touch up they were then to return at 4, 8, and 12 month points for reevaluation.
By 4 months after their initial treatment all patients received a touch and discussed their satisfaction level and results results thus far. Of the 4 filler types, Radiesse patients reported the highest level of satisfaction. Juvéderm at this stage received the lowest mark.
When patients returned at their 4 and 8 month reevaluation periods, all patients administered Radiesse had reported nearly the same level of satisfaction. Perlane and Juvéderm ULTRA did well around this point while Juvéderm required reapplication in most patients. By 12 months, Radiesse had the highest patient satisfaction with the least application. Juvéderm received the lowest level with the largest amount of product to be used.
Patient satisfaction is based on the overall appearance or lack of appearance of their Nasolabial Folds (NLFs). While all tested fillers did what they were expected to do, the amount of the product used varied significantly. This table summarizes the amount of product used within the 1 year trial period:
• Juvéderm – 8 Syringes
• Juvéderm ULTRA – 4 Syringes
• Perlane – 3 Syringes
• Radiesse – 2 Syringes
One should always consider effectiveness over cost when considering cosmetic surgery. The results will make up for the expense and can minimize the amount of future work that may be needed. On a side note, Radiesse is one of few dermal types of filler that maintains consistency especially in patients whom suffer from HIV-associated facial lipoatrophy.
