One of the biggest problems people face is not necessarily slowing the signs of skin aging, it's avoiding all the bad skin care information out there. Lots of it is garbage and it can hurt you. The skin is the largest organ in the body, so whatever you put on it or do to it is going to have a huge impact.
People often think, maybe because skin shows on the outside of the body, that it is somehow separate from the inside of the body. But remember, your skin is layers deep and it has a gazillion pores on the outside that absorb everything.
So be extra careful about any skin care information you pickup.
Here are a few things to avoid:
Skin peels and exfoliation. What could possibly make people think that removing a layer of skin is healthy? You don't do that to your brain when your memory starts to falter. Smokers don't walk into a surgeon's office and say, "Can you scrape the tar off my lungs?".
Not that it has to be said (it's obvious), but these practices are very harsh on skin. And unnecessary. Your skin has a built-in natural exfoliating process; trust that skin will rejuvenate itself.
Also, beware of anything to do with Botox. I disagree with the procedure, because it paralyzes muscles under the skin to pull skin tighter. But it's not just the Botox injection you have to avoid anymore. Now there are anti-wrinkle creams containing Botox alternatives.
The ingredients in these creams work the same way; they paralyze muscles. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration in the US is investigating these Botox alternatives to determine if they should be reclassified as drugs. Something powerful enough to paralyze facial muscles shouldn't be available over the counter.
So if you receive skin care info on peels or Botox, I recommend avoiding it.
Now, let's move to something positive---the right kind of skin care information.
Well, if you want to use a skin cream or a whole skincare line to fight wrinkles, lines, and dark circles, there's a very specific thing the ingredients must do. The ingredients must be able to stimulate your body into making more collagen and elastin. These are the two skin proteins chiefly responsible for making skin smooth and supple.
As you age, like a lot things, your body produces less and less collagen and elastin. This loss is a primary driver of skin aging.
