Learn the Ways to Prevent Wrinkles

Looking for ways to prevent wrinkles? There are many factors that can encourage the formation of a wrinkle or a fine line. But, at the root of all of these factors is oxidative stress caused by free radical damage.

Free radicals are molecules that serve some valuable functions in the human body, but at a point, they basically need to be "turned off". The counter balance that turns the radicals off is known as an antioxidant.

Antioxidants are vitamins and other nutrients. They come from fruits, vegetables, meats, legumes and oils. In fact, nearly all of the foods we eat have some antioxidant activity.

Some dermatologists observe that antioxidant supplementation and increased antioxidants in the diet may be one of the ways to prevent wrinkles. While others feel that applying them directly, using nourishing lotions and creams, is more effective.

I would have to vote for applying them directly, primarily because the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin) has no blood vessels. It gets its nourishment through a process called diffusion, which is, at best an indirect approach.

With age, all of our bodily functions start to slow down. It only stands to reason that the process of diffusion would slow down, as well. So, your face may literally be "starving" for nourishment.

The regular use of antioxidant-rich creams is only one of the ways to prevent wrinkles. Let's look at a few others.

Are you getting enough sleep? All of the natural rejuvenation processes, including the formation of new skin cells and fibers, goes on while you are sleeping. If you routinely suffer from a lack of restful sleep, it will soon start to show on your face.

Since, this is the time when cellular damage is repaired and replacement cells are created, it just makes sense to use a night cream that supports the process. One effective ingredient for this purpose is "active" manuka honey.

All varieties of honey are beneficial as skin-antioxidants and antibacterial agents. Honey helps heal injuries and blemishes, is beneficial for treating acne and psoriasis, but certain types of honey are more "active" than others.

The pollen for manuka is gathered solely from the New Zealand flowering shrub that bears the same name. Researchers first discovered the health benefits of the variety several years ago. But only recently has it become one of the popular ways to prevent wrinkles.

Scientists have documented that when applied topically, in the form of a cream or a lotion, manuka supports the skin rejuvenation process and assists in the formation of stronger collagen. In addition, the antioxidant activity protect against free radical damage.

Another effective ingredient, because of its ability to support skin-cell renewal, is avocado oil. In clinical studies, it has been shown to increase the amount of collagen in the skin. Normally, we start to produce less collagen at around the age of 30.

Keeping the process going is one of the best ways to prevent wrinkles. All you need are the right ingredients, in the right combination and remember to use them at the right time.
