The Truth About Skincare And Acne

You read the ads and got recommedations from your friends.

This latest skincare line will work wonders for your skin.

You buy it. Use it. Then you end up with a face full of blackheads, whiteheads and pimples. So what is going on?

First of all, is your skincare non comedogenic? Non comedogenic means not likely to cause comedones. You know those bumps in your skin? Those are hardened oil plugs stuck in the pores of your skin.

Whiteheads and blackheads are comedones. Blackheads are black because the pore is open and the contents have oxidised, making it turn black.

Non comedogenic skincare does not clog the pores. So what is the big deal about non comedogenic skincare?

Well, skincare that clogs the pores can give you acne. Acne starts with clogged pores. Bacteria breeds happily in these pores. This leads to inlfammation and angry red spots that we know as pimples.

If you have pimple prone skin, stick to non comedogenic skincare products. Some oils are non comedogenic. Almond, sunflower, olive and evening primrose oil are non comedogenic, hence are more suitable for older, acne prone skin that need more nourishment.

Besides keeping the pores clean, you should also kill the bacteria that causes acne. Switch to a skincare line that is formulated to manage acne, to clear the skin and to keep it clear.

For starters, these often contain antibacterial ingredients like tea tree oil, benzoyl peroxide, AHAs, BHAs or triclosan. These kill the bacteria that causes acne.

You should also use a scrub, followed by clay based mask weekly to unblock pores and clean up the gunk in the skin. Ingredients like salicylic acid and AHAs or BHAs slough off dead skin cells and unclog the pores so that the pores may be cleaned up more effectively.
