Most parents teach their children the importance of good hygiene habits such as washing hands before meals or after using the toilet. The trouble is that the older we get, the more sloppy we are with the good practices that we learned in our childhood. Grown-ups are always in a hurry and often end up not doing the things that they should, as if such good practices are no longer relevant to them but only to children.
However, if you want to stay healthy and avoid becoming ill, you really cannot afford to skip washing your hands. Germs are everywhere and some of them can cause infections and illnesses. We pick up germs by touching objects and other people. If you then touch your eyes, nose or mouth afterwards, you can infect yourself with these germs. Worse still, you can spread these germs to others like your family or friends by touching them. This is in fact a common mechanism by which infections such as diarrhea or common colds spread among a group of people.
According to UNICEF, millions of children's lives can be saved in third world countries from causes like diarrhea and pneumonia by the simple habit of washing hands with soap and water after going to the toilet. In fact the UN had just marked the very first global hand-washing day on the 15th October 2008 to emphasize the importance of hand hygiene.
So wash your hands properly using warm running water and soap, particularly after using the toilet, before preparing or eating food, after coughing or sneezing into your hands, and after changing a diaper. Wet your hands, work up some soap lather and rub the hands together thoroughly for 20 seconds before rinsing them with running water. Lastly, dry your hands with a clean towel.
To avoid cross contamination it is better to use liquid soap instead of a soap bar. This way germs will not be deposited and accumulated on the soap bar. Better still, use an automatic soap dispenser with hands free operation. Ordinary liquid soap dispensers require a push at the top to dispense soap. This leaves the possibility that the top of the dispenser can become contaminated with germs when it is pushed.
With an automatic soap dispenser, all you need to do is to put your hand under the spout. A sensor will detect the presence of your hand and start dispensing an appropriate amount of liquid soap. No pushing is required. This helps to ensure better hand hygiene and brings an element of fun into hand washing.
