Why Sun Protective Swimwear can Block 98% of all UV Rays

Sun protective swimwear is endorsed by physicians and organizations such as the Skin Cancer Foundation. This type of sportswear has proven that it offers consumers a comfortable and stylish means of protecting their skin. During the warmer months when people are spending time at the beach or in a pool the exposure to UV light is at an all time high.

Bathing suits traditionally cover relatively small areas of the body, which puts individuals at a greater risk for developing severe sunburn or other sun related skin problems. Children want to play for hours in the summer sun and much of this time is spent splashing in the waves or playing in a swimming pool. If they are wearing regular swimwear, the UV light can penetrate the material and burn their skin. With sun protective swimwear, these burning rays are effectively blocked up to 98%.

Parents should realize that the best way to protect the tender skin of little ones is by combining proper sun protective swimwear with sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. Even though you apply sunscreen or sunblock to your kids before they venture outside the protection is only temporary. As children play, swim, and sweat, the shielding effects of the sunscreen products are going to wear away.

Most people know that they need to reapply a coating of sunscreen every few hours but this is generally done only to the parts of the body that are visible. The skin covered by swimwear is often considered to be protected by the clothing being worn. Unfortunately, most swimwear and clothing is not able to block UV light and this skin is fully exposed to the damaging power emitted by the sun.

There are many different styles of sun protective swimwear that is now available for adults and kids. You can even find swimwear that covers your child’s arms, shoulders, and legs. This keeps their body shielded and these swim shirts and swimming tights are fashionable, comfortable, and lightweight. Your kids will enjoy their new look and you will be happy knowing that their skin is protected from the punishing, burning UV rays that are beaming down constantly during the day.

Sun protective swimwear is created from special fabrics that are rated on a UPF scale. The highest rating is 50+ for these garments. This number is found on top quality products that provide the very best protection from UV light. The material is then woven into a tight mesh design that contains tiny air pockets that help the swimwear maintain a lightweight feel while blocking out the sun’s UV rays. The ability of these types of clothing to block both UA and UVB rays is due to the fabric material as well as the tight weave that is used in the garment’s construction. Some of the fabrics are even treated with substances that offer additional UV blocking power. When you purchase sun protective garments with 50+ ratings these items should continue to offer superior shielding from UV light whether the fabric is wet or dry.
