CPAP Mask Types

CPAP masks are the devices used to deliver air to sleep apnea sufferers while they sleep. CPAP, the acronym for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, is the most effective treatment used today for sleep apnea and the CPAP mask types available vary between three basic configurations or models. Here they are.

1. CPAP Nasal Pillow Masks

These are the lightest and smallest of sleep apnea masks. That’s because they fit only up against the nostrils of the face using cushion-like, soft, flexible ends to form a seal. The term “pillow” comes from this cushion seal. Because they are the lightest of masks, they’re often chosen by new sleep apnea patients because they seem less confining.

2. CPAP Nasal Masks

These masks are a step up from the pillow variety. They’re built to form a seal that goes completely around the nose. The seal itself is secured by soft pads usually made with gel-like substances. When fitted properly they provide a more comfortable and effective sleep apnea solution than their pillow cousins.

3. CPAP Full-Face Masks

The largest and most expensive masks in the CPAP line are the full-face masks. Though their name implies that they cover the complete face, in reality they usually cover just the nose and mouth area. Their seal is also created using gel-like substances which can be replace over time as they wear out and stiffen (keeping a flexible seal is vital to getting the full benefit of the treatment. They take a little more getting used to than the pillow or nasal masks, but they also deliver better air flow. And if you’re a sleeper who breathes with their mouth, this mask is your best choice.

Please note, that all masks take some getting used to, but with a little time and patience you can embrace them. That’s because of the restful sleep they help you attain. So take your time and look at all the different cpap mask types to see which one appeals most to you.
