Sleep Apnea Explained

Obstructive sleep apnea (also known as OSA) is a sleeping disorder that disturbs your normal breathing while you sleep. During an apnea episode your upper airway becomes blocked or obstructed by the relaxed, soft tissue in your throat. This gets in the way of the normal inhale/exhale rhythm of your breathing and your breathing becomes impaired or is stopped altogether.

When your breathing is impaired, you tend to snore which isn’t really harmful (though snoring can be a symptom of sleep apnea). But when your breathing is stopped altogether, your body and brain are unable to receive the rest they need to function properly. Over time that can lead to some serious health issues.

You see, when the blockage occurs you literally stop breathing. After a short while, the brain senses this and sends signals to wake you up. This sort of jolts you into opening up your airway and you can breathe again. The problem is that this can happen many times during the night and so you end up spending far too little time in deep, restful sleep and far too much time in a near waking state.

The result is that you’re sleep deprived which creates other problems for you during your waking hours. For instance, you’ll have much less energy than you normally would. You’ll also have a much harder time concentrating on anything that needs your focus or attention.  And lastly, since your body is deprived of its rest, you open yourself up to a much greater likelihood of succumbing to some bug or virus.

All of this happens to you while you’re asleep – so you may not even be aware that it’s happening. That’s why it’s important to consult a qualified and trusted medical professional if you even suspect you might be a sleep apnea sufferer. So if you think you’re getting a good night’s sleep and yet you feel tired most days and walk around like you’re in a mental fog, play it safe and talk to your doctor.
