The Causes for Insomnia

Insomnia is a major problem that plenty of people have faced from time to time. I’ve even had my share of insomnia and I can tell you from first-hand experience of how treacherous it can be to the day after. Many people become cranky and irritable and also many automobile-related accidents have been caused by those who simply did not get enough sleep the night before they were on the road. Insomnia is a major problem that plenty of people have faced from time to time.

Psychological causes are some of the major reasons for insomnia. Those who suffer from insomnia may have some anxiety or stress issues. Anxiety is when an individual may have feelings of tension, uncertainty, fear, or helplessness. This relates to how your current problems affect you. This relates to stress as well, because stress is how you cope with said problems. Dealing with these problems brings about a change to the way that you may think about certain things. This could easily interfere with how you sleep at night. Not being able to sleep can create even more psychological problems in the future. This is why it is important to seek counseling if this becomes a major problem.

There are also a plethora of physical causes as well that fuel the fire of insomnia. For example, many women have hormonal changes. Changes such as pregnancy, menstruation, or menopause can definitely be a cause to insomnia. Medical conditions and genetics can also be reasons for insomnia. Medical conditions such as asthma, osteoporosis or even allergies can affect the way you sleep. I’m quite sure that many people aren’t able to sleep at night because of waking in the middle of the night due to certain pains from their conditions. Also, several people have insomnia due to their genes. There are scientists and researchers that are trying to find the connection.

Lastly, there are many short-term factors that can add to insomnia. Working different shifts can automatically ruin the normal sleeping periods that your body is used to. The body has to adjust to new sleeping habits. One major cause that adds to insomnia is the excessive use of alcohol and caffeine. Many people are aware that caffeine automatically puts an end to sleep and while alcohol may help a person relax, it also ruins a full night of sleep. This makes the individual have fragmented periods of sleep instead of sleeping the full night away.

These are but a few examples that cause insomnia. If you are having major problems with insomnia, it is important that you see a counselor or physician that can help you with your condition.
