Blu-Ray has emerged victorious in the battle for high definition supremacy, and has now set its sights on the portable DVD player market, but has it come too late to make a real impact?
With Panasonic's release of the world's first blu-ray compatible portable DVD player, it's time for you to consider taking your portable DVD viewing to the high definition level.
At this time Blu-Ray has yet to make a significant mark on the world of portable DVD players and there are several key reasons for this.
1. Image Quality: Matters far less on a small screen. Blu-Ray is meant to enhance the movie watching experience by providing High Definition Video. High definition vieo offers resolutions ranging from 1280x720 pixels or 1920x1080 pixels meaning that the best way to enjoy these high resolutions is on a big screen. In fact the larger the screen the better. With their 7'' to 10'' screens portable DVD players will not show any great improvement in video quality.
2. Price: The average portable DVD player ranges in price from just over 100 dollars US to 200 dollars. On the other hand a portable Blu-Ray player currently costs around 500 dollars US or more.
3. Power: High definition video requires far more power than conventional portable DVD players do, and as it currently stands, Lithium-Ion batteries are barely able to provide three hours of non-stop viewing
4. Disk Price: Blu-Ray discs cost a considerable amount more than standard definition DVD.
With all these factors working against portable Blu-Ray players, it seems unlikely that they will able to put a significant dent into the traditional portable DVD market. Unfortunately for Blu-Ray these aren't the only factors holding it back as the emergence of other new technologies also throw a considerable road block in front of the portable Blu-Ray and put new demands on the players. Theses new technologies include:
1. Digital TV: With the shift from analog to digital TV, consumers are more likely to want a portable player that they can hook up to a digital input.
2. Gaming Consoles: Will it be possible to hook up a video game console such as an Xbox 360 or a PS3 to the player.
3. Card Ports: Many consumers want the ability to take the SD cards straight from their cameras and insert them into their portable player so that they are able to share home videos and pictures on a larger screen.
With the advent of these new technologies, consumers are going to be looking for more out of their portable media than just the ability to view movies on the go. Add that together with the fact that as far as portable movie viewing goes, definition and picture quality is not as high on the list of what is valued by the consumer and at the elevated cost it certainly would seem that Blu-Ray has come to late to the portable DVD player market.
