Make Money Selling Children’s Clothes

Starting your own children’s clothing business can be highly lucrative. In essence, you buy clothes for a few dollars, add a design and then re-sell them for a decent profit. It can be an exciting and profitable side business, and for some, it can turn into a full-time home-based business. To be a successful children’s clothing seller, follow these steps.

Understand the Market

Many of the big box and department stores have fairly limited ranges of children’s and baby clothes. You’ll find almost no certified organic children’s clothing and few, if any, local designs. These are two great opportunities for a you to develop a product line that will offer something different for today’s parents and grandparents. Do as much market research as you can. Look at kids clothing design, where to source your garments, production and marketing as part of the things you need to understand.

Find a Good Children’s Clothing Supplier

It’s unlikely that you will need thousands of garments when you begin, so buying directly from overseas manufacturers is probably not an option. The initial costs would be substantial and navigating import laws and dealing with the risk of importing children’s clothing makes direct importing a bad idea for most startup clothing companies.

The best option is to look for a blank children’s clothing importer who can offer garments at near wholesale prices. These companies buy thousands of baby and children’s clothes at a time and pass the savings on to small and medium-size clothing designers. Many will also have sample packs as a way to sample their products’ quality prior to making a large purchase.

Make or Have a Graphic Design Make your Designs

If you have graphic design skills, you can make your own children’s clothing designs. If not, don’t be afraid to contact local graphic designers. Most communities have many graphic designers that are skilled enough to produce great designs for clothing. An investment in great designs will be repaid many times over in increased sales.

Imprinting your Clothes

At home businesses can easily acquire the tools for imprinting kid’s clothes. A silk screening setup or heat transfer are the two main methods. Both have advantages and disadvantages, including cost, required space, production volume and needed skill. Will you be the next self-made children’s clothing guru? Your hard work, attention to detail and ability to keep costs under control will contribute to your success.
