Starting out on your own is usually one of the main desires of people who plan to start a pool business. But as the business grows and branches out, it is important to remember that one person cannot do everything. Assessing the right time to start hiring and employing a staff according to the business needs will help turn a self employment venture into a large and flourishing business. So, it is important to keep a few hiring tips in mind that help in assess whether it is the right time to start hiring, how many numbers should you be looking at and most importantly what kind of skilled or unskilled help is required.
Pool cleaning, pool building or landscaping are not one-man shows. These businesses involve a large amount of mental and physical labor, apart from the time and attention that are required for advertising and other such marketing activities. Therefore the need to start hiring begins right from the initial stages of a pool cleaning or building business. There is no possible way to go about running a pool cleaning business without at least two or more assistants, unless of course you are looking for the client to jump into the pool to help you. Pool builders on the other hand know that simply digging the ditch for the pool will require the expertise of other team members.
If unsure of the plunge being taken begin with a small staff of two or three employees. As the business grows you may add members to your team as and when required. While this rule works well for the pool cleaning business, pool builders need to begin with a larger staff. While pool cleaning requires two or three people to do the job, pool builders need to hire more hands since the task requires more physical labor. With landscaping forming a part of the scenario, things get even more complicated. Therefore, while a pool cleaning business can look at a small staff of three employees (say), a pool building business definitely needs four times the number.
Pool cleaners can attempt to hire unskilled labor and train them in the art of pool cleaning. A pool builder on the other hand has to consider skilled labor for several parts of the job. Masons, plumbers and several other such skilled laborers are required before you can even begin to float the idea of a pool building business. Unless the unskilled labor comes at an extremely low remuneration, try and hire skilled personnel’s who have both theoretical and practical knowledge of the job demanded of them. Over and above the expertise of the prospective employee, do look for dedication and business ethics when hiring. A staff that is dedicated towards the job will pick up the threads of the work much sooner than a skilled laborer who is not a sincere one.
Keeping these tips in mind will help convert your pool business into a larger and more profitable one by hiring at the right time and hiring the right people.
