Because we come from a culture thart is focused on work, when it is time for reitrement many of us have a difficult time adfusting to the freedom that comes with retirement. It is up to you as an individual to accept retiement as a time of freedom or imprisonment. Fortunately, retirement gives you the freedom to do what you want to do, when you want to and with whom you want to. However, in order to handle all of this free time, you need to develop the creativeness in you to think of ways to fill your newly foundĀ free time. You must be able to create interests and purposes that are your own and not you spouse's or your friends'. Otherwise, you will have a difficult time finding meaning and purpose in your retirement life.
Freedom is not always as easy as it appears and depends on the ingenuity of the individual to create fulfillment without any interference from any one else. It may surprise you to know that even highly intelligent and motivated people have a difficult time making the transition to reitrement and the personal freedom that accompanies it. Because retirement is so different from working for a corporation or and organization where someone else plans a major portion of their waking hours, many people are at a loss when no one else is planning their hours for them.
Self-reliant individuals seem to accommodate to the freedom that retirement brings as they have been independent thinkers in the working world and carry this trait into retirement. For others, retirement can give a higher quality of life as you may develop a more healthful life when you leave your stressful job behind you.
The best way to look at retirement is to see that this may be your last shot to pursue intellectual, personal and spiritual goals that you have never had the time to pursue.
