Set Specific Employee Guidelines and Procedure before Opening a Dollar Store

We’ve all probably had the boss no-one imagined could stay employed given the way employees were being treated.  If you have had a boss like that, you more than likely made a commitment to never be like that person when opening a dollar store.  You swore off creating a whole set of guidelines, procedures and expectations that every employee would be required to know and follow.  You swore that under no circumstances would you ever tell people what to do.  You wanted a laid back environment where everyone knew what to do, and everyone did exactly that.

But what if things did not occur as you had planned?  What if simply letting the employees work as a team to run the store wasn’t enough?  What if you had some of the following challenges in your store?  What if there were no guidelines and employees were free to choose what to wear?  Some would likely select old, torn jeans and old, torn t-shirts with the logo and slogan for their favorite alcoholic beverage.  Others might fight the heat by wearing short, shorts and revealing tops.

What about cell phone and other electronic devises?  Without clear guidelines you can expect employees to carry their personal cell phone while on the sales floor.  If friends call, they might try to keep the call short.  However those calls will almost always be taken on the sale floor no matter what they were doing at the time.  And of course calls will just seem to take a little longer for some employees.  Texting will have the same impacts.  What will shoppers think if they are asking for help while someone is chatting with a friend?

What if one of your team members chooses to sit on the floor?  Maybe it is behind their cash register.  Technically they are still on the sales floor.  And sure they would be out of sight.  But they could comb their hair, add makeup, make a phone call, or even to catch a quick nap while out of customer view.  Is that what you pay employees to do?

Your dollar store will suffer if any of these examples occur.

When you own a dollar store there is no reason to be a tyrant.  You can establish a great working environment and a team spirit without being the dictator you were trying to escape.  Your employees do need to know the boundaries.  They need to know your expectations and they need the training to be successful at their job.

If you are opening a dollar store take the time to develop a comprehensive list of expectations for your employees.  Create job descriptions and training plans.   Provide the training, coaching and feedback to assure employees are meeting your expectations.  Their success is your success.

To your success when opening a dollar store!
