Grow Your Small Business with Virtual Support Services
If you're finding it difficult to reach your goals, perhaps you've been procrastinating, putting off tasks you know need to be done. Have you postponed until tomorrow a task that would have been better handled today? Hitting your prospecting goals? Sending out your monthly email newsletter? Updating your website?
The longer you procrastinate, the more difficult it becomes to take action to complete the task. Often, putting off the task can increase the cost of completing it. If you put off opening your bills and your payment is late, you end up paying a late fee. If you don't update your website in a timely manner, you may lose potential customers who are looking for current information.
Here are six strategies you can use to help you stop procrastinating and reach your goals:
1. Awareness
Just being aware of the circumstances that trigger procrastination can help you avoid procrastination. It's also important to take note of the tasks you do complete in a timely manner. Think about how you feel and use these positive feelings and habits to help reduce or eliminate procrastination in other areas.
2. Delegate or Dump
If there is a particular task you consistently put off, a great strategy is to delegate it or dump it. If you don't enjoy the task, consider delegating it. Use a virtual assistant to handle those tasks so you can complete the tasks you do enjoy. If you can't delegate it,
3. Small Steps
Prioritize. However, it may be best to begin with a simple task that you can easily accomplish. If you start with a difficult task, you can easily become frustrated and give up. Once you complete a simple task, go on to the next one. Reward yourself for your accomplishments.
4. Time Limits
Put time limits on tasks. If you haven't accomplished a task by a certain time or date, perhaps it's not as important as you thought.
5. Touch It Once
Handle each item immediately by completing it, delegating it or dumping it. Include e-mails: handle it the first time you read it, delegate, or archive.
6. Prioritize
Prioritize what's most important and focus on completing those items first.
