Small business can be a robust helper to a thriving economy. The definition of what is a small business varies by country. In America it is one with fewer than 100 employees but in Australia it has fewer than 15 employees. Some definitions also take into account net volume of sales. Most family owned business at least start out by being small businesses or even micro-businesses with a home base.
These wonderful organizations are responsible for large numbers of employees when looked at as a group industry. Most are privately owned rather than publicly owned and are sole proprietorships, partnerships or corporations. Small businesses are not normally leaders in their field but they may grow to those positions of dominance over time when well managed. Many independent contractors and service people are categorized as small businesses. This includes some small shops and individuals like lawyers, beauticians, handymen, accountants, photographers, bakeries, convenience stores, restaurants and other smaller operations.
Small businesses have the advantage of being able to be a home based start up, or find their beginnings through use of the Internet and a website. There is less bureaucracy and more freedom to deal with and adapt to changes in the marketplace. Persons working in small business have the opportunity to work more closely with actual clients and may form friendships with their customers. Small business entrepreneurs are independent and do not have a boss. They are taking all the risk and they can enjoy all the profits. It is a good endeavor for those who may have difficulty working under a boss if they have the knowledge and skills to run their own business successfully.
One problem many small businesses encounter is under-capitalization. The principals may underestimate the costs of doing business or have a poor business plan. Some persons run up their personal charge accounts and even go bankrupt trying to make a go at it in their own business. Another problem is when the company begins to grow. At a certain point it will need larger facilities and additional employees. It may move from being a small business to a medium or large size business over time. Controlling costs and growth are two delicate balancing acts for any business.
Small business is very important, contributing about half the GDP in America and employing about half the workforce. Marketing, franchising, finance and skill all contribute to Small business success.
