Most small business owners love their business, and of course they should – it’s their creation, hard work and vision. So it is understandable that many small business owners find it extremely difficult to come to terms with having to delegate work. But the truth is that in order to increase productivity for any business, delegation is essential.
For business owners who aren’t used to delegating, there are a few things that can be done to make the transition easier in the short term and to help guarantee success in the long term. Taking the time up front to initiate the transition to more delegated tasks is one that is worthwhile.
Establish Goals - The most important step any business owner can take before using this technique to increase productivity is to establish a clear goal for their business that is easily communicated to staff at every level. It must encompass what the business stands for, what it hopes to achieve and if possible what makes it the great business it is.
Document Procedures - Once the business goals are clear and ready to be communicated, it is important to implement an in-depth collection of policy and procedure manuals. Any task in the business that can physically be delegated to another staff member and away from the business owner should be.
