Social Networking Software – Why have it?

Charles Babbage could never have imagined his discovery of computers would make the world such a tiny place. Computers have revolutionized the way we interact and thanks to further advancement in internet technology the world as of now has certainly restricted to a tiny place. The newest phenomenon in the internet space is undoubtedly the social networking websites which have redefined the way we interact and connect to people. Social networking provides an ideal platform for information sharing between people and groups especially sharing similar interests. The phenomenon of social networking has left no country untouched and has made its presence felt in one way or the other.

The idea of starting my own social networking platform seems very challenging and appealing to me. I feel it challenging simply because of the fact that there are already a large number of social networking websites dominating the internet space and I have identified a challenge in making my social networking website stand apart from the flock. I have made up my mind to have my own social networking website up and ready soon. I don’t want to emulate any of the giants such as facebook.com, twitter.com, orkut.com, myspace.com, etc. but take it one step at a time.

Got some expert advice from close quarters that to begin with I will have to invest in to a good social networking software. Absolutely! I said to all of them and agreed that a solid foundation is an essential first step on which I do not want to compromise upon. A further analysis of the market provided information that there are many free to use Social Networking Software such as Ning.com which are available online and provide in-built solutions to kick-start my social networking campaigns. However, on careful review I found these free social networking software lacking in features/functionalities which I want on my social networking website. Therefore, I have now decided to tap on to the power and potential of open-source technologies in general and the ever-popular Drupal in particular.

After extensive research I am finalizing Drupal as the platform on which I will build my social networking campaign. Such is the excitement that I wanted to pen it all in the form of this article and share my experience with you all.
