Samuel Eto could be counting his last days as a player of FC Barcelona. After 5 season in Catalonia, the Cameroonian international is facing either an exit or reconciliation with Barca coach, Pep Guardiola.
Start of the row
Exactly a year ago, Barcelona appointed Guardiola as a new head coach and thats where the trouble started for the Cameroonian. The new manager made it publicly clear that he won`t be counting Ronaldinho, Deco and Eto. And while Barca officials were able to sell Deco and Ronaldinho, Eto couldn`t find a suitable club to join and ended up staying at FC Barcelona.
Successful season
Although Barca made a slow start to the season with an opening loss and a home draw, soon the team picked up their performance and found themselves top of the league and ended up staying there until the finish. The most memorable matches of 08-09 were El Clasico matches at Camp Nou and Santiago Bernabeu, Champions league matches vs. Chelsea, Copa Del Rey final vs. Athletic Bilbao and the Champions League Final in Rome against Manchester United.
Samuel Eto on his part contributed heavily to FC Barcelona`s success. The Cameroonian striker scored 30 goals in Spanish league, which was surpased only by Europen Golden Bott winner, Diego Forlan. The striker was also intrumental in Barca`s Champions League campaign with his opening goal in the Final vs. Manchester United.
Future
Despite his achievements Samuel Eto is "persona non grata" in Catalonia these days. One camp says he`s a selfish player and only thrives beacuse surrounded by world class midfielders, such as Xavi, Iniesta or Messi. Others claim that Eto is not being appreciated enough and that he`s been treated unfairly.
Whatever the truth is, these are the facts: So far Eto showed nothing but loyalty to his club and keeps insisting on his stay but the FC Barcelona coach, Pep Guardiola is reluctant to retain the striker.
