Color Correcting in iPhoto

Most digital cameras are equipped with so much hi-tech features that it often comes as a surprise when a few of the images we capture turn out to be over- or underexposed, making them either too bright or dark, or to have colors that are too warm or cold.

Fortunately, these can be corrected right in your iPhoto image management software. iPhoto's image editing capabilities are more than sufficient for most people. They are pretty simple too. When correcting for colors, follow the steps below.

Steps in Correcting Colors in iPhoto

Select the photo you wish to edit from the All Photos tab, or the Album or Event where it is stored by double-clicking on it. To bring up the floating editing toolbar, click on the "arrows" button at the lower left portion of your screen.

Open the Adjustment Panel by selecting "Adjust" from the editing toolbar. This panel displays sliders that enable the adjustment of exposure, color temperature, and image sharpness, among other adjustable image qualities. You only need to move the sliders until you get the picture you want.

Adjusting for exposure brightens a dark image or darkens an overly bright image. A photo taken with a fast shutter speed to freeze action may result in underexposure, while one taken with a slow shutter to emphasize movement may be overexposed.

Color temperature in layman's language refers to the photo's representation of the true and real colors of the subject. Sometimes colors can be distorted by available light. With iPhoto's Adjustment Panel this distortion can easily be corrected.

Image sharpness can also be enhanced with iPhoto using the "Reduce Noise" slider. High ISO sensitivity settings and low light can sometimes affect image sharpness.

Saving Your Color-Corrected Photo

After you have perfected your photo, be sure to save it under different name. In this way you preserve the original so that if you later realize that some colors are not right in the edited version, you can always start editing with it again.
