Computer Runs Slow

It can be annoying when your computer runs slow. Besides that high frustration level, a slow computer can reduce your productivity levels and waste a lot of your time. There are a few things that you can do that are relatively simple that can help fix a slow computer and bring a smile back to your face.

Defragging

If your computer runs slow then defragmenting your hard drive is one way to fix it. As a system ages the file system is less able to layout data on the hard drive in a continuous sequence. Files are spread out on the hard drive causing the disk head to have to move more in order to retrieve all the data. The increase in head movement reduces data access speed to the hard drive resulting in a slower computer.

The Disk Defragmenter tool comes with Windows. To run the defragment tool begin at the Start Menu, click on Programs (or All Programs), choose Accessories and finally System Tools. Find the Disk Defragmenter tool and select it. The program will start up and you can begin the defragmetation process.

The process may take some time and can slow your computer down while it is running. You may want to start this process at night before heading off to bed or when you are not planning on using the computer as it may take some time to complete.

Deleting Temporary Files

You may not realize it but temporary files slow down your computer. Deleting temporary files you can fix a slow computer because it frees up space on the hard drive. You use the Disk Cleanup tool that comes with Windows to delete temporary files. To run the tool begin at the Start Menu, click on Programs (or All Programs), choose Accessories and finally System Tools. Find the Disk Cleanup Tool and select it. You select the drive you want to clean up and run the program. Follow the instructions on screen to delete the temporary files.

Unused Applications

You can free up more hard drive space by removing any unwanted applications. Go to the Control Panel and use the Add or Remove Programs tool (in Windows Vista this is under Programs and Features) and remove the applications you no longer use. If you are unsure about an application it may be best to leave it on rather than remove something your system might need.

Clean up the registry

The Windows registry is a file (a database to be exact) that contains information about settings on your computer. These include hardware settings, options for the operating system, application settings and user settings.

The registry is the final item to check and you can get free applications online to check for any problems with it. Fixing registry errors can help if your computer runs slow as well as helping with freezing or crashing programs and many other operating system related errors. These programs will determine the best course of action to repair and optimize your computer to help improve stability and speed.
