The Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs) is one of the several APIs in the J2EE platform. These are a collection of Java classes, XML files and interfaces for developing secure multi-user components in a J2EE environment. Just like JSP and JavaBeans, EJBs run inside an EJB container (application server). The container provides some built-in services for EJBs to function. These services include resource management, security, component pooling and multiple-client handling.
There are three types of Enterprise JavaBeans:
- Message-Driven Beans
- Entity Beans
- Session Beans
Message Driven Beans are new to the Enterprise JavaBeans specifications. They provide a system for EJBs to respond to asynchronous JMS messages from other sources. Message Driven Beans have opened a new standard for web and software development companies to create Message Oriented Middleware based applications.
Entity Beans are data in an Enterprise JavaBeans mechanism. The data is included in a database or any other data source. There are two kinds of Entity Beans: Bean-Managed Persistence Entity Beans and Container-Managed Persistence Entity Beans. BMP beans provide more control to web & software development companies to save and retrieve data from non-database sources like XML files. CMP beans are simpler to develop. They work quite well with access database and are responsible for saving and retrieving the data from databases.
Enterprise JavaBeans has certain drawbacks in web and software development process. One of the major drawbacks is its expensiveness. EJB containers (application servers) are quiet expensive. The license fee itself is one thousand dollars. Moreover, web & software development companies have to pay the fee all over again if the application server crashes.
Most developers think that an EJB based system is difficult to develop and maintain, but a web development in India has the experience of building and maintaining EJB systems, thus negating this false assumption. Due to the rising standard of UML to model business practices, it has become easy to architect, build, deploy and maintain EJB based J2EE systems.
