How to Improve PC Speed

It often seems as time goes by a computer loses a significant amount of its original speed. Sometimes this lost speed is thought to be a normal part of computer aging, but this is usually not the case. It takes a long time for a PC's parts to become old enough for their aging to affect the way a computer will perform.

In this article, we will talk about the things that most frequently will play a part in helping a computer's speed deteriorate and what we can do to prevent this from happening.

Basically, there are two things affecting a computer's overall performance. They are:

1-The computer's resources

2-Things using the computer's resources.

A Computer's Resources

When we talk about a computer's resources we are referring to the stuff inside the computer that make it run. Those things most important to how fast a PC will run include:

1- How much ram, or onboard memory it contains

2- The speed of its front side buss; usually measured in Megabytes (600MB, 1,600MB, 2,800MB and the like)

3- The type of microprocessor and the amount of its L1 and L2 cache.

These things are part of the computer and as such they do not change by themselves. Actually, in today's computers, ram is the only thing you could change that would alter the speed. It is possible but it is impractical most times to try to upgrade a computer's front side buss or microprocessor as this would mean the motherboard would need to be changed.

Most times, when a once fast computer slows down we are concerned with finding out what stole its resources. We set out to find the culprit and get the computer's original resources back, rather than try to make the computer powerful enough to be unaffected by these loses of resources. The simple fact is many times, it would be an impossible task to make a computer perform well enough to make the things stealing its resources become negligible.

Stolen Resources

When a computer becomes slow, either over a short or long period of time, there are usually very familiar unauthorized villains stealing the computer's resources and causing its performance to suffer.

Spyware, adware, Trojans, keyloggers and other types of viruses which we refer to as malware, or malicious software most often is involved in the operation that hijacks a computer's power and performance.

For the purposes of this article, we do not need to differentiate between these parasites. What is important is we realize we must often scan our computer for all types of spyware and all types of malware and viruses. This is the first necessary step in computer maintenance because it will keep our PC's free of these things that destroy our computer's performance, not to mention it can also save our identity from being stolen.

And The Registry!

Also, don't forget the importance of keeping your PC's registry clean! The computer's registry starts to build up corruption from the first day it is run. This does not mean the computer has to be abused for its registry to become corrupt, because normal use will tend to cause meaningless and unhelpful entries to become logged in the registry. These types of entries are what are known as registry corruption and they need to be removed on a regular basis with a good registry cleaner. If they are not, they will cause your computer to lose some or all of its speed.

There are a couple of other things you should do that will help keep your computer up to top speed. When you install a new program, don't choose the option of letting the program start automatically at computer start up. Make sure all the dust is blown out of your computer from time to time and make sure there are no slot covers missing. But most of all make sure you are free from spyware, viruses and registry corruption and your computer will continue to race down the information highway like it did the first day you started it up.
