Introduction of the Mpeg Format

The full name of MPEG is “Moving Picture Expert Group”, which is used to create VCD, SVCD, DVD discs. MPEG format is a international compression standard for moving images. To reduce redundancy data, it adopted Lossy Compression algorithms, which removes the redundancy between subsequent images and previous images while preserves most similar parts. Currently, there are 3 compression standard of MPEG – MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. Moreover, MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 is being developed.

MPEG-1 is generated in 1992, and it is an international standard designed for transferring digital video and audio data when bandwidth is less than 1.5Mbps. The extension name of MPEG-1 includes .mpg, .mlv, .mpe, .mpeg as well as .dat files in VCD.

Generated in 1994, MPEG-2 is a advanced industrial standard that is designed for higher image quality and higher transmission rate. This format is adopted in DVD/SVCD production (compression) mainly, in the same time, it is also widely used in HDTV, video editing, and processing require superior quality. The extension name of MPEG-1 includes .mpg, .mpe, .mpeg, .m2v and .vob files in DVD.

As the solution of playing video stream of high quality, MPEG-4 is developed in 1998 specially. With frame reconstruction technology, it can compress and transmit data under narrow-bandwidth condition. The most attraction of MPEG is it is able to store video and audio data of DVD quality in a small file. The extension name of MPEG-4 can be .asf, .mov, DivX, .AVI, etc.
