So you want to learn how to edit the registry settings and keep windows registry clean? Maybe you want to modify some settings or just do a general clean of the registry, okay, but first a brief warning:
Messing with the windows registry can have a variety of detrimental effects on your computer enjoyment. Edit the registry at your own risk. What can happen? If you use the registry editor incorrectly you can cause problems with the computer that will require you to reinstall the operating system. Yes, that’s right. You will have to start from scratch. Consider yourself warned. Learning how to edit the registry settings and keep windows registry clean can be fairly simple, just remember that you have to be careful.
There are a few simple steps that you are going to have to follow in order to open the Windows registry editor. It is very easy to do, in fact, it is so simple to do that it is hard to believe that you are opening up the heart of the operating system. To open the Windows registry editor do the following:
- Click the Start menu
- Click Run
- Type in “regedit” and click ok.
There you have it, open heart surgery.
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, before you make any changes with the Windows registry editor make sure you create a back up of your registry. Creating a backup will allow you to restore the settings to what they were before you started changing things.
I hate to repeat myself, but it is worth doing just so you know how important this is… make sure that you use extreme caution when you are using the Windows registry editor. If you make any incorrect modifications to the registry you can actually end up ruining your Windows system. In a lot of cases, however, Windows will actually automatically replace the corrupted registry with the backup that you have stored when you reboot so it is critical that you back up the registry before making changes.

If you are not comfortable using the Windows registry editor, even if you have done some research on it, then your best bet is just going to be to leave it to a professional. There are a lot of programs out there designed to take the guess work and stress out of cleaning up the registry for you.
