Bhagvad geeta: the essence of Hinduism

The Bhagavad-Geeta is one of the most important Hindu scriptures and considered as one of the most important philosophical classics of the world. Bhagavad-Geeta is also known as Gitopanishad. It is the essence of Vedic knowledge and one of the most important Upanishads in Vedic literature, The Bhagavad-Geeta  comprises of 18 Chapters and 700 verses of the Gita with a beautiful accompaniment of flute, veena, sitar, mridanga, tabla and tala...The Mahabharata confirms that Lord Krishna spoke the Bhagavad-Gita to Arjuna at the Battle of Kuruksetra in 3137 B.C.. According to specific astrological references in the Vedic scriptures, the year 3102 B.C. is the beginning of kali Yuga which began 35 years after the battle 5000 years ago.

The word Geeta means song and the word Bhagavad means God, often the Bhagavad-Gita is called the Song of God. In the monumental, historical epic Mahabharata was written by Vedavyasa. The Bhagavad-Gita is the essence of Hinduism and a part of Mahabharata. It teaches the non-sectarian universal spiritual philosophy on the metaphysical science of the highest Reality. Lord Krishna, the speaker of bhagavad Geeta, is the Supreme Being reincarnate, who spoke in about 3,100 years BCE. The Gita gives non-fear based knowledge of the higher Self, and answers two universal questions: Who am I, and how I can live a happy and peaceful life in this world of dualities? It's a book of wisdom, yoga or spiritual growth that inspired Thoreau, Emerson, Einstein, Gandhi and many others. A repeated study with faith purifies our psyche and guides us to face the challenges of modern living leading to inner peace.

The original language of the Bhagavad-Geeta was classical Sanskrit from India. Historically many very extraordinary people such as Albert Einsten, Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Albert Schweitzer, Herman Hesse, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Aldous Huxley, Rudolph Steiner and Nikola Tesla to name but a few have read Srimad Bhagavad-Geeta and were inspired by its timeless wisdom. Accurate, fundamental knowledge about God, the ultimate truth, creation, birth and death, the results of actions, the eternal soul, liberation and the purpose as well as the goal of human existence.

The Bhagavad Geeta ("Song of God") is the essence of the Vedas and Upanishads. It is a universal scripture applicable to people of all temperaments, for all times. It is a book with sublime thoughts and practical instructions on Yoga, Devotion, Vedanta and Action. The Bhagavad Geeta has influenced many great thinkers over the years. The Gita tried to include the fundamentals of two ancient Indian philosophies into one document and reconcile the principal differences between them. At the outset, one must note that the two doctrines (Darshans) were often extremely difficult to understand. Hence the inevitable contradictions or duality of interpretation. The Six Darshans of ancient India were actually of differing origin and purpose, but all were brought into the scheme by being recognized as viable ways of salvation. They were divided into three groups of two complementary schools of thought (Darshans) or doctrines: Nyaya and Vaisesika; Sankhyya and Yoga; and Mimamsha and Vedanta. The Bhagavad Gita attempted to reconcile the Sankhyya philosophy with those of the Vedanta doctrine.

In the Bhagavad Geeta, a great battle is about to begin. Arjuna, the prince who is leading one side, is upset because he will have to kill his own relatives, some of whom are fighting on the other side. The Hindu god Krishna, who is disguised as Arjuna's charioteer, tells Arjuna not to worry about people dying in battle, because their souls will be reborn into new bodies. People should not think about their own little souls anyway, Krishna says, but they should try to become part of the great Soul that is the whole universe.Gita Jayanti is a celebration of the gift of the Bhagavad Geeta by Lord Krishna to the people of the world. It is celebrated on the Ekadashi or 11th day of the bright half of the lunar month in December/January every year (8th December 2008). The occasion is celebrated with special readings of the Bhagavad Gita in temples and Hindu organizations across the world. Some organizations also distribute copies of the Gita for free to promote the message of this Holy Scripture.
