4 Reasons to Teach Martial Arts to Children

A lot of kids have the opportunity to join sports teams at school, enjoying the camaraderie of team spirit and competition. Parents can also enroll them into extracurricular sports activities, such as Little League. While any type of outlet that allows children to participate in competitive sports is good, martial arts offers a unique blend of benefits. For kids who are willing to apply themselves, learning karate, kung fu, or taekwondo can help them develop skills on which they'll rely for the rest of their lives. Below, you'll discover 4 reasons to consider enrolling your children in martial arts classes.

#1 - Balance And Control

When kids are very young, their weight is distributed poorly throughout their bodies. They eventually adapt, of course, but it takes years. Learning a discipline like kung fu or karate forces them to quickly develop balance and timing. By using their entire body (whether through sparring or the repetition of moves), they learn coordination and control. In doing so, they discover how to use their body for maximum effect.

#2 - Keeping Them Active

More than ever before, children are gaining weight at an alarming rate. Not only do many of them lead sedentary lives, staring at their televisions and playing computer games, but they eat an enormous amount of junk food. Obesity rates in kids under 10 are climbing. Fitness experts have been extolling the virtues of regular physical activity through competitive sports for years. Martial arts is an ideal vehicle. It provides a significant level of exercise, which helps kids develop strength, endurance, and agility while boosting their energy levels.

#3 - Mental Discipline

Scientists argue that there is a direct link between physical activity and mental acuity. Children who regularly participate in martial arts are typically more capable of mental clarity. This can have a number of potential ripple effects. Their attention span lengthens. They develop emotional maturity more quickly than their peers. They learn to approach situations thoughtfully rather than reacting emotionally. Enrolling children in karate classes often helps to eliminate behavioral problems. They develop self-control, confidence, and a level of patience that escapes other kids.

#4 - Self-Defense

Being able to defend themselves against those who would do them harm is important and martial arts can teach young children how to do that effectively. But, self-defense goes much deeper. It's about being able to resolve conflicts before they escalate. It involves learning how to avoid a hostile situation or to dilute aggression before a physical altercation erupts. Enrolling a child in martial arts classes provides the skills - both mental and physical - to accomplish that.

Preparing Them For Success

Kids who have trained in karate, kung fu, or other disciplines often have a unique perspective. They've learned skills which influence how they perceive themselves and those around them. They adopt a level of self-control and thoughtfulness to problem resolution. In later years, they'll have the advantage of applying these skills to their personal and professional lives.

If you're a parent, speak with your child about joining a school. Make them a part of the decision process so they'll gain a level of comfort. With the proper motivation and encouragement, most children approach the martial arts enthusiastically. As long as their parents are willing to support their efforts, kids have an opportunity to gain a significant advantage in life.
