While hunting bear and deer as a sport often receives fairly negative media coverage, there are still those who actively take part in it and have done so traditionally for many years. Strict guidelines must be adhered to though and in the United States of America and Canada, where bear and deer hunting, amongst hunting for other game, is pretty prevalent hunters are advised as to the applicable laws and regulations. Restrictions which dictate open or closed hunt seasons are often put on hunters, and licenses are required, making hunting sports of this type stringently-governed pursuits.
Those who argue in favor of hunting cite population and pest control as one of the beneficial side-effects. Those who stand up against the idea of it view the activity as inhumane.
Whatever your viewpoint on hunting, it has to be acknowledged that as a sport it is considered a well-managed concern with a great deal of authoritative control applied to who can hunt, how they can hunt, and what and where they can hunt. Hunters are advised about the age group of animals that fall into the acceptable game bracket and illegal poaching of bear and deer is not just frowned upon but is categorized as an offense punishable according to the relevant state's laws.
The black bear is one of the most commonly hunted members of the Ursidae group with white tail deer representing the most popularly hunted member of the Cervidae family. Both animals are hunted for food, as well as sport, using various techniques and different kinds of weaponry. Skills in shooting and archery are imperative if the experience is to be a successful one for the hunter, and as humane an experience as possible for his or her prey.
As with any sport that is judged to have high risks associated with it, following safety guidelines is essential, so too the wearing of the correct clothing and the safe use of hunting equipment.
State environmental departments are a good source of information regarding hunting season timetables. Such organizations will also be able to give specifics about the legalities connected with what animals are considered legal game.
Organized hunts are available throughout the US and Canada so anyone considering hunting for the first time would be well advised to join a reputable and recognized hunt program. That way the newcomer is not exposing themselves to risk and he or she also has the benefit of a qualified guide's experience in what is a potentially dangerous situation.
The bear, in pagan symbolism, represents introspection and primitive power. The bear if you come face to face with one and are inexperienced can represent very real danger, so the importance of being accompanied by an expert cannot be stressed enough.
Symbolically the deer signifies gentleness. While hunting seems to some a barbaric pursuit, it does exist and while it continues to do so it is best, surely, that it does so in a way that promotes respectful treatment of animals and encourages safe practice in the hunting communities worldwide.
