Detroit is a sports town. It's a city with passionate fans and remarkable teams. When it comes to collegiate sports, Southeastern Michigan delivers a range of excitement, from Michigan State to the University of Michigan to Wayne State. With so many universities featuring some of the top collegiate sports teams, there's no time to like now to take advantage of some college spirit.
Michigan's oldest university, the University of Michigan was founded about 20 years before the territory of Michigan became a state. Originally located in Detroit, U of M was moved to Ann Arbor in 1837. The U of M Wolverines sports teams participate in the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision and in the Big Ten Conference in all sports except men's hockey. The university's football program ranks first in NCAA history in both wins and winning percentage. Playing at Michigan Stadium, the Blue and Yellow draw crowds that exceed 100,000. Its fiercest rivalries include Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Ohio State.
The men's ice hockey team, which plays at Yost Ice Arena, has won nine national championships, while the men's basketball team, playing at Crisler Arena, has appeared in four Final Fours and won one national championship.
A member of the Big 10 Conference, Michigan State University in East Lansing is well known - with its green and white colors and Sparty, the mascot. Located three miles east of Michigan's state capitol, the 5,200-acre campus was originally founded in 1855, and has a long tradition of research and today is one of the top 100 universities in the world. Football has a long tradition at MSU and this Division 1 team won the Rose Bowl in 1954, 1956, and 1988 and boasts six national championships. Competing in Spartan Stadium, MSU's traditional archrival is the University of Michigan, against whom they compete for the Paul Bunyan Trophy. MSU is also one of the three Big Ten teams to have an annual non-conference football game against Notre Dame. Its men's basketball and ice hockey teams have also won national titles.
Founded in 1849, Eastern Michigan University, located in Ypsilanti, is well known as being one of the largest producers of professional educators in the country. Eastern Michigan University's sports teams participate in the Mid-American Conference, which comprises 12 universities in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, New York, and Ohio. Also sporting the colors of green and white, the EMU Eagles offer 21 NCAA Division 1 Varsity sports. EMU's men's basketball has appeared in four NCAA Division 1 tournaments, and have a 3-4 record, tired for third best among Michigan colleges. The Eagles have the most MAC championships in men's swimming and diving.
Located in Detroit's Midtown Cultural Center, Wayne State University puts its emphasis on research, with 11 schools and colleges offering more than 350 major subject areas. Founded in 1868, the university's 203-acre main campus links 100 education and research buildings in the heart of Detroit. The university is also well known for its hosting of the Detroit Festival of the Arts. Western State University's green and gold Warriors participate in NCAA Division II in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for all sports except ice hockey.
The University of Detroit, founded in 1877, and Mercy College of Detroit, founded in 1941, consolidated in 1990 to form the University of Detroit Mercy, Michigan's largest and most comprehensive Catholic university. Sponsored by the Society of Jesus and the Religious Sisters of Mercy, the school offers nearly 100 academic degrees and programs of study through seven colleges and schools. Located on three campuses in Detroit, the UDM has consistently ranked among the top tier of Midwestern master's universities in U.S. News and World Report's "American Best Colleges."
The Detroit Titans are the NCAA Division 1 team of the university. Competing in the Horizon League, UDM is consistently a contender for the Horizon League title in men's basketball. ESPN's well-known college basketball commentator, Dick Vitale, was the Detroit men's basketball head coach for four seasons before serving as the school's Athletic Director. He also coached the Detroit Pistons.
The red, white and blue Titans will be the host institution for the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Midwest Regional and 2009 Men's Basketball Final Four, which are both played at Ford Field.
