Federer’s Reign - 209 Weeks as #1 in Atp Rankings

After 4 years in the number one position the talented Swiss tennis player, Roger Federer continues to amaze the sports world by establishing a new record of the most weeks in the number one position.

His early career started in his home town in Basel, Switzerland by the age of six. Some years later he joined the Swiss National champion groups and began his real training at the tennis centre in Ecublens. In 1998 Federer won the famous Junior Wimbledon Title and became listed in the ATP Tour rankings.

In 2001 his journey to the top continued but it was his quarter final match against Pete Sampras at Wimbledon that sealed his future as the next champion in the tennis world; that year he finished in the 13th position in the overall rankings.

2004 was a catapult year for Federer who managed to win three of the four singles Grand Slam Tournaments; his first win was the Australian Open in straight sets followed by Wimbledon; his usual territory and lastly the U.S. Open by defeating the Australian Lleyton Hewitt; Federer wrapped up the year by winning the Master Cup. The following years to would witness Federer’s raising to a total of 12 Grand Slams and 53 career singles titles.

At the present , Federer is in pursuit of additional Grand Slam titles to break Sampra’s record and to pass on in history as “the tennis legend”. As the champion of most of the Slams except for the Red Clay courts at Roland Garros which refuse to fall to his greatness; he shows extraordinary adaptability despite the surface, powerful shots, captivating coolness and incredible skills even under the worst pressures.

Most recently, at the 2008 Australian Open in Melbourne the first Grand Slam of the year Federer was stung by the new Serbian star Djokovic. This has indeed raised an alarm that there are difficult times ahead as finally the Swiss has been challenged. Let’s say a healthy reality check for everyone particularly Federer who has not had a coach for more than a year and whose training requires to be taken more seriously. Great things are certainly expected while the Swiss keeps amassing weeks as the sole king but closely followed by others’ hunger which also continues to endure.
