Making Positive Life Changes
Author: Michael Greeves | Posted: 19-05-2008 | Comments: 0 | Views: 21 | Rating: (53) (?)
Making positive lifestyle changes is good for your physical, mental, and emotional health. There are many ways to positively make the changes you need to make in your life, whether it be starting a workout program or starting a new diet. There are several important things to keep in mind that will lead to your success.
1) Visualize success.
By visualizing success, you are making it a reality in your mind. If you want to lose weight, visualize what you want to look like to keep the goal a reality. If you want to work out more, visualize yourself on the treadmill.
2) Explore discomfort.
In order to make a positive change, you need to understand why you couldn't before. If your goal is to lose weight, then ask yourself why you couldn't do it before. Knowing the answer to that question will guarantee that you do not fall into that trap again and will be able to make the change positively this time.
3) Take it one step at a time.
Failure happens when people try to do too much too fast. Taking it one step at a time will insure that your goal is successfully reached without any negative consequences.
4) Celebrate your progress.
Celebrating your progress is extremely important. Without milestone celebrations, the goals seems impossible to achieve. If your goal is to lose 50 pounds, treat yourself at every 10. Do something really special at 25, and then again at 50. You are worth it! Celebrating is a way to respect yourself and embrace the change you are making.
5) Always keep an open mind.
If you keep an open mind about things, you are better able to handle adversity. If you lose 10 pounds and hit a plateau, having an open mind will allow you to work through the plateau instead of just giving up. Don't think that it's "all or nothing." If you eat a giant brownie one day, it will not ruin your entire diet. Keep an open mind, and adapt to the little changes that are happening on the way to the big change.
6) Have a fall-back position.
This seems a little pessimistic, but having a fall-back position will allow your change to be positive. You will not feel like you are "settling" for something less than you want, you are just switching plans to a Plan B. If your goal was to work out every day for one hour, a possible back up plan could be to work out 5 days a week for one hour and 30 minutes instead. So then if you work your way up and at 5 days a week you realize you can't manage another two, your fall-back plan will come into play. The change you are making is still positive, because you've come from not working out at all to working out 5 days a week!
By making positive lifestyle changes, you are eliminating the possibility of failure. By using these guidelines, you will be able to make a goal and achieve it because you have already thought out all possibilities. You have a Plan B in case Plan A doesn't work out as planned, you have celebrations planned at small steps throughout the way, you're able to visualize your success, and by keeping an open mind you are able to quickly adapt to any change and overcome any hurdle standing between you and your goal. Making these positive changes will benefit you all around and give you a boost of confidence for reaching a goal you set for yourself!
