Matt Serra The Future UFC Lightweight Champion

Author: Jon Murray Author Ranking Blue | Posted: 09-02-2007 | Comments: 0 | Views: 32 | Rating:  (55) Article Popularity - Blue (?) Got a Question? Ask.

Let's get things straight, I'm saying that Matt Serra has no chance against Georges St Pierre in their UFC welterweight championship bout on April 7, 2007 in Houston Texas. What I am saying is that Matt "The Terror" Serra will be a future champion in the UFC lightweight division.

The UFC does not have another fighter like Matt Serra. Serra is a brilliant fighter, a fighter with a 7-4 MMA record, 5-4 in the UFC. Huh? How can I call a fighter with a record like that brilliant? As is often the case in combat sports, Matt Serra is not defined as a fighter by his victories, but by his losses and Matt Serra's losses are impressive!

Matt Serra's first loss came in May 2001 to none other than Shonie Carter. Matt Serra was dominating this fight and was ten seconds away from winning when Shonie caught Matt with an impressive spinning back fist. That back fist has become the staple of every MMA knockout highlight reel since. Matt has since avenged his loss to Shonie, but since it was part of the Ultimate Fighter reality series and only a two round fight, the victory does not show on his official record.

BJ Penn was the next MMA wizard to defeat Matt Serra. We all know BJ Penn. He's the rubber man, he is unbelievably talented and flexible. BJ Penn may very well have the most natural talent of any fighter in MMA. That said, Matt Serra lost a very close decision to BJ Penn. I believe that a rematch between these two fighters should be in order. Perhaps it will happen at welterweight, or more appropriately back at lightweight where I believe both of these guys are at their best.

Matt Serra's next loss is a bit iffy. He lost a decision to Din Thomas. Again, I believe Din Thomas is a good fighter, but I'm not sure why Matt Serra couldn't finish him. It's in the books as a Din Thomas victory, but if these two fought again today I am certain that Matt Serra would win.

Karo Parisyan also decisioned Matt Serra, this loss coming in June of 2005. Karo is an excellent Judo/BJJ/Ground fighter, so it's no surprise that this fight went to a decision. Basically both guys strength canceled each other out.

That's four losses, but all four come to well known accomplished fighters. Also, all four fighters are still in the mix, moving their way back up into contention for belts at lightweight and welterweight.

Georges St Pierre is standing in the way of Matt Serra taking the UFC welterweight title on April 7. I don't believe anything short of an injury during the fight will prevent Georges from winning that fight. Full apologies to Matt if he thinks I'm disrespecting his skills, it's not that, it's just that I think Georges is just naturally too big and too good a striker for Matt to be effective. Georges has excellent take down defense and good ground and pound, I believe he will win this fight, let's hope it's a good one though.

Matt Serra belongs at lightweight. This is his natural weight class and he would do very well there. I believe that Matt has current lightweight champion Sean Sherk beaten in both ground skills (BJJ) and striking. The only spot Sherk has an advantage is wrestling skills, however Serra is very dangerous from his back. I believe that after Matt Serra gets this fight with Georges St Pierre over with, he will return to rule the lightweight division, and hopefully set up a rematch with BJ Penn.

Waterboarding: Torture, Inhumane, Illegal
By: Neo! | 05-11-2007
Waterboarding*Why does the United States go on using this technique if it is torture? Is America no better than Iraq, and is willing to torture people for its own ends? And, why does everybody who says this, suddenly disappear, like DoJ Official Daniel Levin, or the four retired JAG officers? *Waterboarding, in case you didn't know, as explained in the video, is tying the person to a board, and then pouring water on his face over a towel, making her believe she's about to drown.

Modern life and fight or flight?
By: HypnoFreak | 01-11-2007
due to our ever hectic modern day living, how do you feel this effects our fight or flight reaction?you may say not at all! but as we can't use our fight or flight basic instinct in modern life does this effect us psyically and mentally?eg if your boss theatens to fire you for being late, you get scared your fight or flight kicks in, you can't leap on you boss and beat him up, and you can't just turn and run out the door, you stand there (usually) and just take it. this can be said for hundreds of modern day situations, so how does this effect us? is this maybe a reason for a lot of illness and stress etc? what do you think??

The Mosul Dam in Iraq in Danger of Collapse
By: Stephen | 30-10-2007
The Mosul Dam in Iraq (though never particularly sturdy) is now in real danger of collapsing. The dam holds about 3 trillion gallons of water. The estimated catastrophe if it takes place is half a million casualties, and a total destruction of the cities of Mosul and extensive parts of Baghdad at least.  Can America be held responsible if this happens? Will the troops come home on time?Is anyone doing something about this?

Am I wrong about my thinking
By: Honeyella | 27-10-2007
I am 46 yrs old. I was married once for 20 yrs and he ended up becoming an alcholic and never home. I had a daughter at the time was 13 when I finally left him. I now have been with a man for 4 yrs. He seemed so jelous of my daughter and I's relationship..We are very close and always enjoyed doing things together..We had gotten married a yr ago and now he said because of our fights about my daughter it has ruined our romance and he said he doesn't love me like he use to. He hasn't touched me in a month..I finally broke down and told him I can't live with some one that doesn't think I am a good wife and mother..his response was no your not..He is an angry man and I am a care free woman..I don't let little things bother me and he does.He has always blamed my daughter for any thing that has caused a fight between us..She is scared to even be in the same room with him..She's 19 now and I don't see her much any more..Am I wrong for not sticking with my husband. During our fights he will call me names ..I know names shouldn't hurt you, but they do me..He says I'm to sensative..I think I am  to caring..I love my daughter and I'm afraid I will loose her.. I always stick up for her and he thinks that is wrong I should be on his side...She's a great young lady...doesn't drink or do drugs and she is in college and working part time..

Challenges for Ufc Champion Anderson Silva are a Weight Class Above
By: Jon Murray | 26/10/2007 | Sports and Fitness
UFC fighters are always looking for an advantage. Some resort to switching up trainers, some vary their training partners and camps, even others unfortunately resort to steroids or other performance enhancing drugs. One of the most common, effective and legal ways to enhance performance is to drop weight temporarily for weigh-ins so that fighters can compete at a lower weight class than their natural weight would be.
