An artificial games area is made up of synthetic grass in-filled with sand or rubber. There are sports surfaces which are made up of synthetic fibres that require no in-fill. Whether in-filled or not, an artificial games area require minimal maintenance and frees you from worries, such as watering, using fertilizers, removing weeds, mowing, draining, and the like, which are essential in the case of natural grass surfaces.
An artificial games area remains lush all through the year and offers the same playing characteristics as that of a natural grass sports field. It can be used all year round because it is undamaged by extreme weather conditions.
The sub-base of an artificial games area is made up of impermeable material, which together with a drainage system, ensures that the pitch is always ready for play. The cost effective nature and the durability of an artificial games area make these sports surfaces ideal for being used as a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) where a wide variety of sports can be played.
An artificial games area also offers protection to players from injuries. This is due to the fact that an elastic layer made from bonded rubber is laid over the foundation at a depth of approximately 10 cm. This layer features the necessary shock absorption and energy rebound characteristics. The types of surfaces or sports pitches that can be used for MUGAs are polymeric surface, bitumen macadam, and synthetic grass.
In addition to the games like hockey and football, athletic events are also being played on artificial sports surfaces owing to their tolerance to intensive use. Synthetic athletics surfaces can be made of liquid polyurethane and rubber crumb. This is a non-porous surface and may cost a huge sum of money. However, if you want to go in for a cost effective option, you could opt for porous surfaces. There is also a third variant, known as sandwich, which is a combination of the other two.
The sports governing bodies at different levels advocate the use of MUGAs because maintaining separate grass sports pitches for different sports is a costly affair. There are various options available in sports surfaces for MUGAs. For instance, polymeric surfaces which are designed to offer shock absorption characteristics to the players can be used for sports such as five-a-side football, basketball, netball and others. Similarly, a porous macadam surface is ideal for sports such as tennis, basketball, and netball. Thus, an artificial games area can be used for playing a wide range of games.
