The Best Golf Courses in Wales
Golf holidays in the UK are an excellent way to relax and enjoy yourself in luxury and style. However, there is one area of the UK that is often overlooked - Wales. We explore some of the best courses to play 18 holes and give you a taste of the excellence that the valleys can provide...
The Celtic Manor Roman Road Course,
This course offers some of the best golf in the UK from a scenic point of view. Originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr, its almost quadruple-barrelled name is a reference to the many ancient Roman roads which criss-cross it and add to its incredible character. Situated in the Celtic Manor resort, the course stretches out over undulating hills towards the Severn Estuary, and offers wonderful views across Somerset and Devon. The course has played host to the Celtic Manor Wales Open and the All Star Cup, and is enjoyably challenging while not being incredibly demanding. Perfect for golf holidays in the UK that blend mesmerising scenery with elegant luxury.
The Celtic Manor Montgomerie Course
This course is named after its designer, the golfing champion and legend Colin Montgomerie. The Montgomerie is an exquisite and intricate course, with deep pot bunkers and sweeping greens meaning it plays and feels very much like a links course. The UK has few courses that can rival the panoramic and commanding views from some of the tees or the variation and scope of the play; it has two, long par fives, some challenging par threes and a few short par fours, all of which create a highly memorable and exciting course.
Royal St. Davids
This famous course is perhaps the most internationally renowned of all of those in Wales, steeped as it is in 100 incredible years of history. A links course with plenty of challenge, Royal St. David's is one of UK golf's most taxing par 69s. Intermediate shots are made yet more challenging by the sand and weather conditions - a good showing on the famous 18 holes is a laudable and very memorable achievement. The host of frequent tours, championships and events (both professional and amateur), Royal St. David's is wonderful to experience on any golf holiday in the UK.
The Celtic Manor 2010 Ryder Cup Course
Especially built for the Ryder Cup in 2010, this course is the crème de la crème when it comes to golf holidays in the UK and Wales. The course is a par 71, 7,493 yard challenge designed to test any golfer. Seasoned golfers will love the nine brand new holes as well as the six signature hole each with a unique water hazard. A wonderful monster of a course, taking it on will excite and entertain you at every turn and give you a huge sense of achievement once you have bested the sting in the tail of the 18th. A real must for all true golf enthusiasts and an exceptional thrill to play on.
