When Spaniards hear about El Gordo, or the Fat One, they either think about Ronaldo, the ex Brazilian footballer, or the Spanish Christmas Lottery. One of the most amazing things about Spanish history that many people do not know about is that there were lotteries in Spain since it first was established. If you still are not sure just how crazy Spaniards are about the Spanish lottery, all you have to do is walk down the street because you most likely will be approached by someone who is trying to sell you a ticket. Then, when it is Christmas, the excitement and craziness really explodes.
One of the most amazing facts about the Spanish lottery is that nearly 98 percent of adults participated in El Gordo last year. If you are not one for gambling because you do not like the odds, well the Christmas Lottery is for you because you have a 15 percent chance of winning a prize. There really is no other lottery in the world that can boast this large of an odd. If you are not planning on being in Spain around Christmas time, you still can partake in the festivities. You actually can purchase tickets as early as July up until Christmas.
Another reason so many people play is because of the way you can buy the tickets. The Christmas Lottery tickets actually are quite expensive but the organizers allow you to buy them in fractions. You can buy a tenth of a ticket or go with a group of people to buy an entire El Gordo ticket. Just make sure you do not try to take a family's lottery numbers because some families have been playing the same ones for generations. Another great thing about the Spanish lottery is that a lot of people win. There actually only are five digits, so a lot of people win because so many people buy tickets.
For those of you not fully familiar with El Gordo, one of the best parts about this Christmas Lottery, expect winning of course, is watching it on television or listening to it on the radio. It really is a huge event that lasts for hours. The organizers have little orphan boys draw the winning numbers. They even sing out the numbers for more entertainment. The Spanish lottery really has taken gambling and the lottery to a country-wide event with their annual lottery drawing.
The Spanish Lottery Superdraws are drawn differently from other lotteries. Most lotteries draw 5 or 6 balls, making up a combination of winning numbers. With the Spanish Lottery Superdraw, each ball has a five-digit number printed on it. These numbers range from 00,000 to 99,999 (except for El Gordo ( elgordo ), where the numbers range from 00,000 to 84,999), and are limited. Once these tickets are sold out, no more are made available.
Tickets for the Spanish Lottery Superdraw can be purchased either as a whole 'serie', or, more commonly, as a less expensive 'décimo' (one tenth of a ticket/serie).
