Combat The Stress Overload In Your Life

Stress overload can cause serious health issues if left unchecked. The body is not designed to handle a constant battle against stressors. While a little stress can help your body cope with everyday pressures, too much can cause a myriad of health and emotional problems.

When your body experiences too much stress on a continual basis, stress overload may occur, causing the nervous system to go into overdrive. The worst type of stress overload is posttraumatic stress disorder, a condition in which a person has been so traumatized; the body and mind react with severe symptoms. This is usually caused by the most extreme circumstances such as surviving a flood, fire or accident; experiencing a war zone; continuous molestation as a child, among others. But, normal stress overload can also be serious. Although caused by much less serious stressors than listed above, they can still create havoc in your life. Some of today's top stressors include: chronic abuse; relational, family or work-related difficulties; the death of a loved one; severe illness in you or someone you love; ongoing mental or behavioral problems such as experienced with ADHD; over work, and over scheduling.

To avoid the physical, mental and behavioral issues that stress overload can create, it is important to learn to better handle the daily pressures of life before they manifest themselves in a more detrimental way. Some things anyone can do to lesson their chance of feeling the effects of an overload of stress in their lives are:

Think Positively.
The best way to stop stress in its tracks is to learn how to not let it eat at you. When a problem arises, take control of it Think positively. Believe that you can handle any situation that comes your way. See setbacks as temporary and solvable. And remember, change is a normal part of life.

Solve Problems While They're Little.
Don't let little issues at home or work fester until they become big problems to solve. Tackle the little stuff right away. This will put you back in control, and ease the stress of feeling overwhelmed and out of options.

Find A Support System.
Find someone to talk to: a friend, a relative, or even a therapist. Sometimes, when we talk things out we can more easily see things more clearly, stripping stressors of their power. If there just isn't anyone trustworthy enough in your life to open up to, then start a journal and record your feelings. This too can help ease the burdens you're carrying.

Have Some Fun.
Eliminate stress by finding an activity that you really enjoy, and that helps you relax. It can be anything, as long as it's fun and peaceful: walking, playing tennis, or golf, crafting, reading, hiking, swimming, painting, or whatever it is that helps calm your spirit and body.

Stay Healthy.
A healthy body is a strong body. Tackle stress by keeping your body in tip-top physical shape. Eat well, get plenty of rest and exercise regularly. You'll cope better if your body is working well.

Simplify.
Life is hectic these days, but chances are it doesn't have to be. If a crazy schedule is stressing you out, then it's time to simplify. Cut out all unnecessary activities. Order a pizza once a week. Hire someone to clean your house. Stay home this weekend. Too much activity, even activities you enjoy -- can be very overwhelming. Cut back and watch your stress levels subside.

Stress doesn't have to be detrimental to your health, if you learn to control it better.
