Managing Stress: Two Habits You Can Develop

Managing stress is one of the best things you can do for your health and your overall quality of life. There are a lot of simple things you can do to reduce your stress levels. Most are free or inexpensive.

What are some stress management tools? Exercise and meditation are things you can do. There are nutritional supplements you can take, and a healthy diet is a big help. Plus you could take a look at your life and maybe make some significant changes in the things that stress you. Changing your life isn't always an option, as in the case of someone in your family having serious health problems, but you can always work on your own feelings.

Let's look at exercise and meditation.

Exercise

Regular exercise is needed for optimum health, no doubt about it. Countless studies have demonstrated that you can cut your chances of getting a lot of unpleasant illnesses by exercising. You don't want to tangle with cancer, diabetes, or other nasties if you can help it! Better to put on those shoes and get out there for a brisk walk, a game of tennis, or whatever else you like. Besides warding off disease, the exercise will reduce your stress and lead you to sleep better and feel better in general.

Yoga, T'ai Chi, and Qigong are three forms of exercise that can be used to manage stress, as they include breathing, and the gentle movements help to give you a more balanced and peaceful sense of being in your body. People who practice them report that sometimes doing these exercise forms takes them into an extraordinarily peaceful state of being.

Meditation

Meditation consists of focusing the mind, or letting it go completely, and relaxing your body. It has a long history in Eastern cultures and has become more popular in the West as well. There are thousands of variations in meditation methods, and any of them should work fine to help you manage stress.

One simple way is to sit quietly on a comfortable chair. Close your eyes and relax your muscles, starting with the feet and allowing relaxation to occur all the way up your body. Put your attention on your breathing, which should be relaxed as well. Breathe in slowly and deeply, and breathe out in a relaxed manner as well. Do this for 10 minutes or more once or twice a day. It may help both your stress levels and your general well-being. This is a pretty skimpy description of the process so you may want to find out more first.

Whatever you do, you'll be rewarded if you take steps to manage your stress and keep at it until it becomes a habit.
