Are there Side Effects of Omega 3 Fatty Acids?

What if I told you there should be no negative side effects of omega 3 fatty acids, unless dosage recommendations are exceeded or consumption of foods containing them is too high?  As with any other kind of fat, too much of it could cause weight gain, although one study showed that weight gain is not a concern.

Most healthcare agencies suggest that no more than 30% of a person’s daily caloric intake should come from fat.  For people with type II diabetes, heart disease and other health problems, they typically recommend a lower percentage than that.

Each gram of fish oil, the most used supplemental form of omega-3s, provides about 9 calories.  Doctors and supplement manufacturers typically recommend 2-3 grams per day.  Research indicates that 3 grams per day is a safe dose.

So, assuming you took the higher dose of 3 grams per day, you would be increasing your daily caloric intake by 27 calories.  A person that normally consumes 2000 calories per day would want no more than 600 of those calories to come from a fat source.

If you included the 27 calories in the 600, you shouldn’t have to worry that weight gain would be one of the side effects of omega 3 fatty acids.  In fact, you might even find that you feel more satisfied, less hungry all of the time, because you are giving your body something that it needs.

Some people complain about fishy tasting burps when they take fish oil.  But, that’s not actually caused by the supplement.  In other words, good brands don’t cause the burping.

The burping is actually caused by oils that have not been processed quickly.  They become oxidized, which means they aren’t as fresh as they should be.

Although there are no unwanted side effects of omega 3 fatty acids, there are some good things that people notice and sometimes wonder about.  For example, if the supplement is rich in DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid), which is very important to the brain, people often notice that their dreams are more vivid.  Most people enjoy that.  They feel more rested when they wake up in the morning.

Fish oil can, at times, relieve constipation.  So, you may notice looser stools than usual when you begin taking the supplement.  People that often suffer from constipation consider that to be one of the benefits.

Excessive bleeding is sometimes listed as one of the side effects of omega 3 fatty acids.  Like aspirin and other drugs that thin the blood, fish oil has anti-coagulant activity.

To be safe, you might want to stop taking the supplement a few days before any planned surgery.  But, research indicates that at doses of 3 grams per day, there is no excessive bleeding or increased bleeding risk.

Basically, this is a food item, not a drug.  Any unwanted side effects of omega 3 fatty acids would be mild, no more than what might be caused by other dietary changes, and antioxidants the benefits are numerous.  So, choose a good brand and give it a try.
