The reason for this huge imbalance and omega-3 deficiency is that the livestock farming practices have changed considerably in the past couple of years. Earlier, cattle were fed on grass, while these days they are fed on corn and grain.

While this diet fattens them up quickly and gives higher profits to meat producers, it leads to a deficiency of Omega 3's in their meat. Similarly farm raised fish are fed on food pellets, and not on sea algae, worms, etc. which is their natural diet. This makes their flesh Omega 3 deficient. Otherwise, fatty fish caught in the wild are the best source of DHA and EPA Omega 3 fatty acids.

Besides that, Westerners used a lot of safflower oil, corn oil, peanut oil, soybean oil, etc. in their diet which are very rich sources of Omega 6, but contain negligible Omega 3 fatty acids.

This leads to a serious imbalance of Omega-6 to omega-3 ratio in their diet. Omega 6 fats give rise to inflammatory compounds which create the lot of health problems, while Omega 3 fatty acids give rise to anti-inflammatory compounds which provide relief in problems such as arthritis, heart diseases, cancer, joint health and much more.

Fish oil is among the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Using purified fish oil supplements that are rich in DHA and EPA is the best way to balance the Omega-6 to omega-3 ratios and reap the amazing health benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids.

Further, you can cut back on the sources of Omega 6 fats and add Omega 3 rich foods such as fish, Omega 3 rich eggs, grass fed meats, walnuts, whole grain, spinach, beans, nuts, green leafy vegetables, flaxseed oil, etc. to your diet.
