Rising Demand for Ephedrine/Ephedra Weight Loss Pills

The production of Ephedrine in China, has become a multimillion dollar export industry. Ephedra sinica, whose Chinese name is Ma Huang, has been used in supplements; intended for weight loss, bodybuilding and energy increase.  Companies in China produce 30,000 tons of Ephedra annually for export; extracting $13 million US from consumers.  This estimated to be approximately 10 times the amount used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Ephedrine (EPH) is widely used by consumers, as a stimulant and appetite suppressant. Ephedrine is a chemical derivative of the herb Ephedra sinica and several other species of Ephedra, and was first discovered and used pharmaceutically; about 100 years ago. This product stimulates the central nervous and cardiovascular systems, and causes the lung bronchi to dilate. Products containing Ephedrine may use the compound extracted from Ephedra; or be produced synthetically. Anecdotal reports have suggested that Ephedrine helps studying, thinking, and concentrating; to a greater degree than caffeine. As such, students, white-collar workers, professional athletes and weight lifters have used Ephedrine (or herbal supplements containing Ephedra); for these purposes.  In fact, a 2006 survey of collegiate hockey players, found that nearly half had used Ephedra; in the belief it would enhance their athletic performance.

Ephedra is recognized as one of the most popular weight loss pills, available to consumers; and is often used as a stimulant while exercising. When taken in combination with aspirin and caffeine (ECA stack), some studies have shown that Ephedra is effective in promoting short-term weight loss. However, there are no conclusive reports to show that the weight loss was maintained.

Many consumers use Ephedrine to boost energy, promote weight loss and improve athletic performance. When combined with caffeine, such as a 5 hour energy shot, Ephedrine’s effects are increased. The use of Ephedrine has been associated with stimulant dependence, as well as deaths from heatstroke in athletes and circulatory problems; such as aortic aneurysm, in weight lifters. Although these side effects are rare, they are noteworthy.
