What is the Optimal Dosage of Fish Oil?

If you are like me, you probably already know how good fish oil is and what it can do for our health. The question that comes to the mind is what dosage of fish oil is required to get these benefits? Let’s find out.

The optimal dosage of fish oil that experts recommend is taking 1000 mg of oil daily. Note that this dosage is for an average person with normal health. If you are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, cancer, diabetes or high blood pressure, you would need a higher dosage of the oil – 2000 mg to 3000 mg daily.

Now, just the total amount of oil taken is not the complete picture. The internal composition of the oil is also important. The primary components of a good fish oil are the two main Omega 3 fats – DHA and EPA.

Traditionally, fish oil has been synonymous with EPA Omega 3 fats. EPA is still the primary ingredient in many fish oils available in the market. Fact is, latest research has shown it’s DHA that is the more beneficial of the two Omega 3 fats. So it is better if your oil contains more DHA than EPA. There is another reason for this – our body can convert DHA into EPA by a simple chemical process. Converting EPA to DHA is not possible though. All the more reason to look for a high DHA content fish oil.

Look for an oil whose one serving contains at least 250 mg DHA and at least 100 mg EPA. This is the correct dosage of fish oil and is enough to provide the beneficial effects of the oil.

There are a couple of things that you need to keep in mind when selecting an oil supplement. First, check the source of the oil – namely which fish has it been extracted from. It should be a DHA rich fish like the salmon or mackerel. An even better option is a mix of hoki (a fish found in New Zealand) oil and tuna oil. This combination provides the ideal ratio of DHA and EPA fats.

Secondly, check if the oil has been properly refined. Molecular Distillation is the process that can do this job effectively. It is however, a complex and expensive process; so many companies do not use it. Make sure your oil has been purified through this process and is a highly concentrated and pure oil.

Taking the correct dosage of fish oil of a DHA rich and refined oil is exactly what needs to be done. So go now and find out a good oil that can protect your and your family’s health.
